NEW!  2010-2011 Request for Pre-proposals (Adobe PDF - June 3, 2010)

Pre-proposal Questions and Answers and Submission Guidelines
AMIF Indirect Costs Policy

Dear Interested Parties:

The American Meat Institute Foundation (AMIF) is a non-profit organization dedicated to research, education and information that benefits the meat and poultry industry.  Originally created in 1944, AMIF funds a broad range of food safety, worker safety, nutrition and consumer information projects.

AMIF invites pre-proposals on applied and fundamental research that will improve the control of microbial pathogens in meat and poultry products.  AMIF is soliciting pre-proposals on controlling Listeria monocytogenes on ready-to-eat (RTE) meat and poultry products, Escherichia coli O157:H7 in fresh beef products and Salmonella in meat and poultry products.  The priorities are listed by pathogen and are further categorized within each.  In a departure from previous priorities, AMIF has developed a Priority Focus category within each pathogen.  This category highlights the areas of greatest concern within a given pathogen research area.  Priority Focus replaces the previously defined Targeted Research area.  Research priorities that are outside of the scope of the three referenced pathogens are listed under Other Food Safety Research.  The specific topics in which AMIF is soliciting pre-proposals are outlined in the file at the top of the page and here.

Research pre-proposals will be reviewed by the AMI Foundation Research Advisory Committee.  This Committee is comprised of leaders in industry, academia and government who volunteer their time to serve in this critical capacity.  With this in mind, the pre-proposals should be as clear, concise and detailed as possible.

The pre-proposal (excluding the curriculum vitae) should not exceed two (2) pages in length.  Pre-proposals should include the following components:

  • Investigator(s) Contact Information (including organization, address, city, state, zip, phone, fax, e-mail);
  • Project Title;
  • Objectives of Research Proposal;
  • Description of Research Project;
  • Benefit of Research to Industry;
  • Approximate Cost of Research;
  • Approximate Timetable of Research; and
  • Brief Curriculum Vitae (including publications relevant to the proposed research).

AMIF is requesting that only the application and curriculum vitae be submitted for review at this time.  Please refer to the grant questions and answers document on the AMIF web site (www.amif.org) for more detail on pre-proposal submission.

Please submit the pre-proposals via Microsoft Word e-mail attachment to the AMIF Director of Research Susan Backus at sbackus@meatami.com AND slbackus@gmail.com by 5 p.m. EDT on Friday, July 30, 2010.  Pre-proposals MUST be submitted to both e-mail addresses above.  Pre-proposals submitted after this date and time will not be accepted.  An acknowledgement receipt will be sent within one business day.

For technical assistance, please contact Betsy Booren at 202-587-4249.  For questions concerning pre-proposal submission, please contact Susan Backus at 202-587-4220.
