The CEOs of the Rancher’s
Cattlemen Action Legal Fund, United
Stockgrowers of America (R-CALF USA) and the
American Meat Institute (AMI) characterized
their meeting today as a cordial and productive
exchange of their respective views concerning
the mandatory country-of-origin labeling (COOL)
law contained in the 2002 Farm Bill.
“We both explained each of our
positions in a very cordial and forthright
manner,” said R-CALF USA CEO Bill Bullard. “No
decisions were made, and no agreements were
reached – other than that we would continue to
represent our respective members on this issue,
and at some point, when we are able to identify
an area of common interest, we have agreed to
meet again.”
“I know that Bill Bullard
and I can agree that the meat industry has done
a good job in responding to consumer demand for
various meat products. It is our hope that we
can continue to discuss ways to benefit the
industry as a whole” said Patrick Boyle, AMI’s
CEO.
Today’s meeting
occurred in Washington, D.C., after an exchange
of letters between R-CALF and AMI
officials.
